Learn About Our Roots

A proudly Canadian company, Mr González Mexican Cuisine was established by Leodegario (Leo) González in February 2019. Born in Mexico, Leo immigrated to Nova Scotia as a Provincial Nominee in 2015, setting his sights on bringing the rich flavours of his native cuisine to communities across the province. He managed a well-established chain restaurant for two years upon his arrival.

Soon after he became a Permanent Resident of Canada, Leo began testing and refining several recipes, emphasizing the use of both local and imported ingredients to support regional suppliers while ensuring his culinary creations remained authentically Mexican. By August 2019, after cutting its teeth as a catering operation, Mr González Mexican Cuisine officially opened to the public on Main Street in Yarmouth.

The response from the community and surrounding areas was overwhelmingly positive, as Leo’s eatery presented itself as a unique dining option in an otherwise quiet restaurant scene. Growth soon followed as the menu expanded, and the restaurant earned a reputation as one of Nova Scotia’s must-visit Mexican dining establishments.

Proud to Serve You

Customer reviews spoke for themselves: “If you love authentic Mexican food, don't look any further. All fixings are from scratch with varying levels of heat, to your taste. So many choices and the portions are very generous, so bring your appetite with you. Friendly and courteous service. Will definitely be back next time I am in Yarmouth,” read one comment on TripAdvisor.

Word of mouth grew, and before long, the succulent flavours of Mr González Mexican Cuisine made mouth-watering impressions on many along the Acadian shores as well as visitors to the area. Customers from across Canada, the US, South America, and even Europe stopped by to experience firsthand the meals that locals were enjoying. Soon, the restaurant’s positive community feedback was bolstered by industry recognition. In 2020, Leo and his team won the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Ultimate Take Out Challenge, and the following year at the ISANS Immigrant Entrepreneurship Awards, Mr. González Mexican Cuisine received an honourable mention in the prestigious Small Business of the Year category.

With sights set on growing his brand — and motivated by a belief that people from all walks of life deserve to enjoy healthy, fresh food with a side of great service — in 2024, Leo made the big decision to relocate his restaurant to Eastern Passage, just outside the capital city of Halifax.

In July, after months of hard work and preparation, Mr González Mexican Cuisine officially opened at its brand-new location at 1466 Main Road, just as you enter the seaside community. While the move positions the restaurant before a larger audience of hungry Nova Scotians, the same commitment to fresh, delectable food and quality, down-home service remains. Customers can enjoy favourites like the monster burrito, country taco, or chimichanga with options to customize based on preference or dietary choices.

Homemade guacamole and salsas continue to serve as the flavorful exclamation points on these rich, juicy selections.

As Mr González Mexican Cuisine enters this exciting new chapter in Eastern Passage, a passion for sharing the heart of Mexican culinary traditions continues to drive the business forward. With a commitment to authenticity and community, Leo looks forward to meeting new faces and welcoming back returning customers, ensuring that every visit is a showcase of great food, tradition, and warm hospitality. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, Mr González Mexican Cuisine promises an unforgettable dining experience that stays true to its origins while embracing its future.
